Former Uganda Defence Minister Jacob Oboth elected Speaker of Parliament
Former Uganda Defence Minister Jacob Marksons Oboth has been elected Speaker of Uganda’s Parliament for the 2026–2031 term, replacing Anita Annet Among, who is facing investigations over allegations including embezzlement of public funds.
Oboth, a lawyer and veteran politician, secured a landslide victory during the parliamentary vote held on May 25, 2026, after obtaining 441 votes. He defeated opposition candidate Paul Mwiru, who received 60 votes, and Justice Minister Norbert Mao, who garnered 15 votes.
Shortly after the announcement of the results, Oboth took the oath of office before senior government officials led by President Yoweri Museveni. He was later handed official instruments of authority, including national symbols, the Constitution, and ceremonial attire associated with the office of Speaker.
Oboth’s rise to the powerful parliamentary position gained momentum earlier this month after Anita Among reportedly attended a meeting at State House on May 15 and was instructed not to seek another term as Speaker.
Among has recently come under intense scrutiny following accusations linked to the misuse of public resources. Investigations reportedly led to searches at her residences in Kampala, where authorities impounded several luxury vehicles, including a Rolls-Royce, Range Rover, Land Cruiser, Mercedes-Maybach, and Lexus.
Prior to the election, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, who is also President Museveni’s son, had hinted on social media that Oboth was set to replace Among.
