Rwandan peacekeepers win UNMISS peacekeepers day football tournament in South Sudan
Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) emerged champions of the football tournament organized as part of activities marking the United Nations International Day of Peacekeepers.
The finals, held on May 30, 2026, at the UNMISS Headquarters in Tomping Base, Juba, brought together military and police contingents from various troop-contributing countries, alongside teams composed of UN civilian staff and local personnel.
In the football final, RWANBATT-3 faced the Giant Killers team, made up of UN civilian staff, in a tightly contested encounter that ended goalless in regular time. The Rwandan contingent secured victory after a dramatic penalty shootout, winning 9–8 to lift the championship trophy.
In the volleyball competition, RWANBATT-3 finished as runners-up after falling 3–0 to the Nepalese Contingent in the final match.
The tournament formed part of celebrations honoring the contribution of UN peacekeepers worldwide and aimed at strengthening camaraderie, teamwork, and esprit de corps among peacekeeping personnel serving under UNMISS in South Sudan.
