A total of 175 men and women have completed professional mediation training, equipping them with skills to help Rwandans resolve conflicts peacefully, without immediately resorting to the courts.

The trainees are part of the 12th cohort in this program and received their certificates on Friday, March 13, 2026. Participants came from diverse sectors including media, the judiciary, clergy, law enforcement, legal practice, and other fields connected to community conflict resolution.

The training program is organized by the Rwanda Judiciary under the Supreme Council of the Judiciary, in partnership with Mediation Home Rwanda and the Edward Mediation Academy.

The program aligns with recent reforms that allow trained mediators to be involved in certain court cases, based on their skills and professionalism.

Uwicyeza Bernadette, Director of Mediation Home Rwanda, explained that mediation strengthens community bonds and prevents conflicts from escalating. “A mediator brings people together and helps them reach practical solutions that preserve relationships and social harmony,” she said.

Justice Alphonse Hitiyaremye, Vice President of the Supreme Council of the Judiciary, encouraged the new mediators to prioritize mediation in their work and help citizens resolve disputes before they escalate to formal legal proceedings.

He stressed that effective mediation reduces the number of cases filed in court and promotes societal stability.

“This program empowers people to take ownership of resolving their conflicts while fostering social cohesion,” Justice Hitiyaremye said. “Mediation is a vital tool for building a more harmonious society.”

Since its launch in 2017, the program has trained over 2,000 mediators, who continue to serve as agents of reconciliation across Rwanda. The training equips mediators to address conflicts in families, workplaces, and communities, ensuring that resolutions are sustainable, constructive, and peaceful.
