The Rwanda Defence Force (RDF) is preparing to deploy a new contingent of security personnel to northern Mozambique as part of ongoing efforts to combat terrorism in the region.

On Friday, Maj Gen Vincent Nyakarundi, the Army Chief of Staff of the RDF, briefed a joint contingent of soldiers and officers from the Rwanda National Police who are set to depart for the mission area to relieve colleagues currently deployed.

The briefing was held at Kami Barracks and was attended by the Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of Operations, Vincent B. Sano.

During the session, Maj Gen Nyakarundi reminded the contingent that their core mission will be to protect civilians from terrorist threats and contribute to the restoration of security in the region.

He encouraged the officers to represent Rwanda with integrity while on deployment, highlighting the importance of discipline, teamwork, and professionalism in fulfilling their responsibilities.

Rwanda deployed its forces to Cabo Delgado in 2021 at the request of the Government of Mozambique following escalating insurgent attacks in the province.

Since then, Rwandan security forces have played a crucial role in supporting efforts to reclaim areas previously under insurgent control, helping restore stability and enabling many residents to return to their communities.

The upcoming deployment forms part of routine rotations aimed at sustaining operational effectiveness and ensuring the continued success of the counter-terrorism mission.
