Rwandan Police Peacekeepers complete mission in Central African Republic
A group of officers from the Rwanda National Police (RNP) has returned to Rwanda after completing a peacekeeping mission in the Central African Republic under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA).
The officers, who were part of Rwanda Formed Police Unit Three (RWAFPU3-3), arrived at Kigali International Airport on March 11, where they were welcomed by Commissioner of Police Yahya Kamunuga, the Commissioner for Peace Support Operations, on behalf of the RNP leadership.
Led by Senior Superintendent of Police Thomas Kayonga, the contingent had been deployed in Bangassou, where they carried out peacekeeping duties for one year.
They were replaced by another Rwandan contingent, RWAFPU3-4, commanded by Chief Superintendent of Police Emmanuel Hitayezu, which had already departed to begin its mission.
While welcoming the officers back home, CP Kamunuga praised them for their discipline and professionalism during the deployment, noting that they represented Rwanda with dedication and integrity throughout the mission.
Speaking on behalf of the returning officers, Superintendent of Police Bernard Gatete said the team successfully fulfilled its mandate, including protecting civilians and supporting peace and stability in the area.
Beyond security responsibilities, the officers also carried out community initiatives aimed at improving the lives of local residents. These included providing access to clean water, offering free medical outreach services, and taking part in monthly community work activities alongside local residents and security organs.
The contingent also formed a youth football team known as Amahoro FC, which helped strengthen ties with the local community through sports and social interaction.
SP Gatete added that the officers arrived in the Central African Republic during the electoral period, during which they helped secure the process by escorting and safeguarding election materials.
Rwanda continues to rank among the leading contributors of police personnel to United Nations peacekeeping missions worldwide.
