Rwandans and Friends of Rwanda in Washington State gathered on Saturday, May 9, 2025, in Bellevue for the Kwibuka 31 commemoration, honoring the victims of the 1994 Genocide Against the Tutsi in Rwanda. The event was organized by RCA Seattle and held at BelPress New Hope Church.

The commemoration began with a “Walk to Remember,” bringing together community members and supporters in solidarity and reflection. The program featured opening remarks from RCA Seattle leader Andrew Ndayambaje, followed by a documentary screening and the reading of victims’ names in remembrance of lives lost during the genocide.

Attendees also witnessed the reception of a King County Proclamation presented by County Relations Manager Angela Phan. Survivors Phillipe and Vestine shared powerful testimonies, while Mayor Steve Woodard led a candle-lighting ceremony symbolizing hope and resilience.

Additional remarks were delivered by Ibuka Seattle Chapter President Aloysie McLeod, Deputy Mayor Pobeee, and Herbert M. Diego, USRCA President-Elect. The audience also received a special video message from Mathilde Mukantabana.

The event concluded with a shared community dinner, providing attendees an opportunity to continue conversations on remembrance, unity, and the commitment to “Never Again.”
