Eastern DRC: Deadly Night Bombardments in Mikenke Raise Alarm Over Civilian Protection
Civilians in Mikenke and surrounding areas in eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo endured a night of intense violence between March 26 and 27, as bombardments reportedly carried out by forces aligned with the Kinshasa government struck densely populated areas.
According to reports from AFC/M23, the attacks allegedly involving kamikaze drones targeted civilian areas over several hours, from late evening into the early morning. The strikes left at least two people dead, one seriously injured, and caused significant destruction to homes, deepening fear and insecurity among residents.
The group claims the bombardments were deliberate, describing them as part of a broader strategy aimed at terrorizing civilian populations rather than isolated or accidental incidents. It argues that such actions violate fundamental principles of international humanitarian law and reflect a continued disregard for civilian life.
These developments come despite earlier confidence-building measures that had raised hopes for de-escalation in the region. Observers note that renewed violence risks undermining ongoing diplomatic efforts linked to international engagements in Doha and Washington.
AFC/M23 has strongly condemned the attacks, calling on national, regional, and international actors to take action. The group also raised concerns over alleged collaboration between government forces and armed groups such as Wazalendo militias and the FDLR, which it says continues despite commitments to stabilize the region.
The situation in other areas, including Minembwe, remains equally concerning, with reports of serious abuses adding to fears of a worsening humanitarian crisis in eastern DRC.
As tensions escalate, calls are growing for urgent measures to protect civilians and prevent further deterioration. Analysts warn that continued inaction by the international community could embolden further violence and deepen instability in an already fragile region.
