Hamas confirms death of Al-Qassam Brigades chief in Israeli airstrike
Hamas has confirmed that the commander-in-chief of its military wing, the Al-Qassam Brigades, Izz al-Din al-Haddad, was killed in an Israeli airstrike carried out in Gaza City on Friday night.
The group announced his death on Saturday, May 16, 2026, saying he was killed during a heavy overnight bombardment by Israeli forces. Hamas said al-Haddad died alongside several members of his family after fighter jets targeted an area in Gaza City.
Israeli officials described al-Haddad as one of the most senior Hamas commanders still operating inside Gaza and accused him of playing a key role in organizing the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel. The Israeli military said the operation was based on intelligence information and claimed the strike was aimed specifically at senior Hamas leadership.
Al-Haddad reportedly took over leadership of the Al-Qassam Brigades after the death of Mohammed Sinwar in 2025. Over the years, he became one of the most influential military figures within Hamas and was considered a close ally of the group’s top leadership.
Following the announcement of his death, funeral prayers were held in Gaza City where hundreds of Palestinians gathered to mourn him. Videos circulating online showed crowds carrying Hamas flags and chanting slogans in support of the movement.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu praised the operation, calling it a major blow to Hamas. Israeli defense officials also stated that operations against Hamas commanders would continue despite ongoing international calls for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza.
The development comes as tensions remain high across the region, with continued airstrikes, humanitarian concerns, and stalled negotiations over hostages and ceasefire agreements.
