M23 claims killing of Wazalendo General Obedi Ngabo in Masisi clashes
Reports indicate that a commander known as General Obedi Ngabo, linked to the Wazalendo coalition in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was killed during clashes near the Rubaya mining area in Masisi territory.
The AFC/M23 group has claimed responsibility, stating that their forces shot and killed him on Friday during heavy fighting in the area.
An AFC/M23 official, Manzi Willy, commented on the incident with a statement expressing satisfaction over his death, saying: “Today the world is a better place without someone called Gen. Obed…”
Independent journalist Steve Wembi, who closely follows developments in eastern Congo, also reports that several sources confirm the death of General Obedi Ngabo, who was reportedly part of the CLD coalition, during Friday’s fighting.
Other local reports from areas near AFC/M23 positions suggest he may have been killed during clashes in Mahanga, Masisi, where Congolese government forces, FDLR, Mai-Mai militias, and Burundian troops allegedly launched coordinated attacks.
It is also reported that his faction acknowledged he was killed in combat during fighting with M23 forces, possibly in Kamomi.
Earlier in February 2026, the FDLR and Nyatura coalition allegedly led by General Obedi Ngabo was accused of launching an attack in Mahanga, Masisi, killing several people and taking around 50 cattle.
The news of his death continues to circulate widely, though no fully independent confirmation has yet been issued by all parties involved.
