President Paul Kagame on Friday received a delegation led by Nurlan Zhakupov, the head of Kazakhstan’s sovereign development fund Samruk-Kazyna, for discussions focused on strengthening cooperation in the mining sector.

The meeting, held on the afternoon of March 6, 2026, was also attended by CEO of Rwanda Development Board (RDB) Jean-Guy Afrika and CEO of Rwanda Mines, Petroleum and Gas Board (RMB) Alice Uwase.

According to the Office of the President, the discussions focused on implementing the cooperation agreement recently signed between Rwanda and Kazakhstan on critical minerals, as well as exploring opportunities in geological research, mineral development, and investment in Rwanda’s mining sector.

In May 2025, Rwanda and Kazakhstan signed a partnership agreement covering trade, technology, mining, and agriculture.

Kazakhstan’s mining company Tau-Ken Samruk recently launched geological exploration for rare and rare-earth metals in Rwanda and Afghanistan.

The initiative aims to strengthen Kazakhstan’s role in the global critical minerals supply chain and is being implemented in Rwanda following the cooperation agreement between the two countries.

Rwanda has 52 exploration sites for minerals such as lithium, the 3Ts (tin, tungsten and tantalum), beryllium, gold and other resources under the national mineral exploration program supported by modern technology.

The country is also particularly rich in wolfram, cassiterite and coltan, which are processed into tungsten, tin and tantalum. Rwanda produces between 8,000 and 10,000 tonnes of these minerals annually.
