President Trump departs for China for first visit in nearly a decade
US President Donald Trump has departed for China for a high-level visit expected to focus on trade relations, regional security issues, and strategic cooperation between Washington and Beijing.
The visit, which began on May 12, 2026, marks Trump’s first trip to China since November 2017 during his first term in office.
During the visit, Trump is expected to hold talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping on May 14 and 15, with discussions likely to cover tensions in the Middle East, trade relations, Taiwan, and China’s control of rare earth minerals.
Speaking before the trip, Trump said the conflict involving Iran would be among the issues discussed, although he insisted the United States does not require China’s support to prevail.
The US President also confirmed that Taiwan would feature in his discussions with Xi Jinping, acknowledging China’s opposition to continued American arms sales to the island.
The visit comes despite years of trade tensions between the two global powers. However, in October 2025, both countries agreed to a one-year pause in their trade dispute following talks held in South Korea.
Chinese authorities have tightened security in several areas ahead of Trump’s arrival, as preparations intensify for the visit.
Trump traveled to China accompanied by several prominent American business leaders, including Tesla and SpaceX founder Elon Musk and others.
