Rwanda calls for fair African Representation in UN Security Council reforms
On the sidelines of the Africa Forward Summit in Nairobi, Rwanda’s Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Olivier Nduhungirehe, participated in a Ministerial-Level Strategic Dialogue.
The Dialogue focused on reforming the United Nations Security Council and the use of veto powers.
During the discussions, Minister Nduhungirehe criticized the repeated use or threat of veto powers to pressure member states or block meaningful humanitarian interventions, warning that such practices have often weakened the Council’s responsibility to maintain international peace and security.
He reaffirmed Rwanda’s support for the Common African Position, which calls for fair and equitable representation of Africa within the UN Security Council.
The Minister further stressed that any structural reform of the Council should be accompanied by improvements in its working methods, particularly in areas of transparency and accountability.
