Rwanda sees major rise in birth registration, with 356,838 children registered in 2025
Rwanda has recorded a significant improvement in birth registration, according to new data released by the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda.
The statistics body announced that a total of 356,838 children were registered in the civil registration system in 2025, marking continued progress in ensuring every child is legally recognized.
According to NISR, the birth registration rate increased from 90.3% in 2024 to 92.9% in 2025, representing a 2.6 percentage point rise. This steady growth reflects ongoing efforts by the government and partners to strengthen civil registration services and raise public awareness about the importance of registering births.
Birth registration is a crucial step in securing children’s rights, including access to education, healthcare, and legal protection. Authorities in Rwanda have been expanding registration services, including digital systems and community-level outreach, to make the process more accessible for families across the country.
Rwanda has aligned its efforts with the Sustainable Development Goals, aiming to achieve 100% birth registration by 2030. The latest figures indicate that the country is steadily moving closer to this target.
Officials emphasize that while the progress is encouraging, continued collaboration and public participation will be essential to ensure that every child born in Rwanda is registered and accounted.
