Rwanda has received more than 200 of its citizens who had been held hostage by the FDLR rebel group in the eastern part of the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

A total of 222 returnees crossed back into Rwanda on March 26, 2026, through the La Corniche border post. The group is largely made up of vulnerable individuals, including 149 children, 58 women, and 15 men.

Upon arrival, they were transported to the Nyarushishi Transit Centre located in Rusizi District, where they will receive temporary assistance and support before reintegration into their communities.

The returnees had been living in a temporary camp in Goma after escaping from various areas in eastern DRC where they had been held by the FDLR.

Local authorities welcomed them back and emphasized that their return represents a valuable addition to the country’s human capital. Officials encouraged them to actively participate in national development and to help spread the message to others still stranded abroad to consider returning home.

They were also reminded of the importance of rebuilding their lives ensuring children go back to school, accessing healthcare, and engaging in productive activities.

As part of the reintegration support, each adult returnee will receive an initial cash package of $188, while minors will be given $113. In addition, all returnees will receive essential food supplies valued at 45,000 Rwandan francs to help them restart their lives.

Authorities reaffirmed that the government will continue to support their reintegration process as they transition back into normal life.
