Rwandan peacekeepers provide free medical care to Inmates in Central African Republic
Rwandan peacekeepers serving under the United Nations Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA) on Thursday provided free medical services to 68 inmates at Bria Prison in Haute-Kotto Prefecture.
The humanitarian outreach was conducted by Rwanda Level 2+ Hospital and RWABG VIII as part of community support activities organized ahead of the United Nations Day celebrations scheduled for May 29, 2026.
During the medical campaign, inmates received a range of healthcare services including internal medicine, dental care, eye treatment, dermatology consultations, and free medication.
Lt Col Dr Isaiah Nzayisenga, Deputy Commander of Rwanda Level 2+ Hospital, said the initiative was intended to support prisoners who often face limited access to healthcare services.
“Healthcare is essential to human life, especially for people living in difficult conditions,” he said, noting that the outreach reflects Rwanda’s commitment to humanitarian support under MINUSCA.
Bria Prison Director Mahamai Adoum Salle praised the Rwandan contingent for its continued support to inmates, saying the peacekeepers have repeatedly provided free treatment and medication to prisoners.
“Normally, when prisoners are taken to outside clinics, medicines must be purchased. However, when the Rwandan contingent conducts such outreach activities, inmates receive treatment and medicines free of charge,” he said.
He thanked MINUSCA and the Rwandan peacekeepers for what he described as valuable and life-changing assistance to vulnerable inmates.
Ponombo Felix, Chief of the Supervision and Health Care Quality Section at the District Sanitary Office of Haute-Kotto Region, also commended the initiative, highlighting the severe healthcare challenges facing the prison.
“The prison faces serious healthcare challenges, including the absence of a clinic and limited medical capacity. The provision of medicines and specialist doctors by the Rwandan contingent is indeed commendable,” he noted.
The outreach activity reflects the continued role of Rwandan peacekeepers in supporting local communities and improving humanitarian conditions in the Central African Republic beyond their core peacekeeping mandate.
