Kenyan Court blocks United States-Linked Ebola arrangement
Kenya’s High Court has temporarily stopped the government from establishing Ebola quarantine, isolation, or treatment facilities linked to arrangements with the United States or any other foreign entity.
The ruling, issued by the Milimani High Court in Nairobi on May 28, 2026, followed a petition filed by the Katiba Institute, which raised concerns about public safety and the possible health risks associated with the alleged arrangement.
Justice Patricia Mande certified the case as urgent and issued conservatory orders barring government agencies from setting up or operationalising any Ebola-related facilities until the matter is fully heard and determined.
The court also prohibited Kenyan authorities from receiving, admitting, or transferring into the country any persons exposed to or infected with Ebola under the disputed arrangement.
According to court documents, the petitioner argued that immediate intervention was necessary to protect public interest and prevent potential health risks while the legality of the arrangement is being examined.
The respondents were directed to submit their responses within 48 hours, with the matter scheduled for further hearing on June 2, 2026.
The decision comes at a time when East African countries are on heightened alert over Ebola outbreaks reported in parts of the region, prompting governments to strengthen surveillance and preparedness measures.
