Tanzania’s President Samia Suluhu Hassan expected in Kigali for Africa nuclear energy Summit
Samia Suluhu Hassan is expected to arrive in Kigali to attend the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa, a major continental gathering focused on the future of nuclear energy development across Africa. The summit will take place from May 18 to May 21, 2026, bringing together African leaders, policymakers, scientists, investors and energy experts.
Organizers of the summit said the participation of President Samia Suluhu Hassan reflects the growing commitment among African leaders to strengthen regional cooperation in the energy sector and explore long-term solutions to electricity shortages affecting many countries on the continent. Her attendance is also seen as a sign of Tanzania’s increasing interest in modern and sustainable energy technologies, including nuclear energy.
The event is being organized in partnership with several international institutions including the International Atomic Energy Agency, Nuclear Energy Agency and the World Nuclear Association. Discussions during the summit are expected to focus on innovation, financing, safety standards, energy security and the role nuclear power could play in supporting Africa’s industrial growth and climate goals.
Rwanda has in recent years positioned itself as a regional hub for technology, innovation and high-level international conferences. Hosting the Nuclear Energy Innovation Summit for Africa is expected to further strengthen the country’s profile in discussions about clean and reliable energy solutions for the continent.
Several African countries are increasingly considering nuclear energy as part of their long-term electricity generation strategies amid rising energy demand, rapid urbanization and the need to reduce dependence on fossil fuels. Experts say nuclear energy could help African economies achieve stable power supply for industries, healthcare, research and digital infrastructure development.
The summit in Kigali is expected to end with renewed commitments toward collaboration in nuclear research, skills development and investment partnerships aimed at expanding access to sustainable energy across Africa.
