Tshisekedi admits DR Congo was misled about military strength against Rwanda
President Félix Tshisekedi has revealed that the Democratic Republic of the Congo was misled about the true capabilities of its armed forces, leading some officials to believe the country could confront Rwanda militarily.
Speaking during a media interview on Wednesday, Tshisekedi said he discovered that the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) were deeply divided, poorly equipped, and infiltrated by hostile elements. He explained that the situation within the military forced his government to reconsider any direct military option against Rwanda.
According to Tshisekedi, the weaknesses inside the Congolese army pushed Kinshasa to prioritize diplomacy instead of escalating the conflict through war. He acknowledged that the government had overestimated the readiness and effectiveness of its military forces.
The Congolese leader added that his administration is now focused on rebuilding and strengthening the country’s defense capabilities. This includes improving military organization, acquiring better equipment, and seeking international partnerships aimed at restoring peace and stability in the eastern part of the country.
Tshisekedi also stated that DR Congo intends to use its vast natural resources as part of broader cooperation efforts with international partners to support peacebuilding and national security initiatives.
Relations between Rwanda and DR Congo have remained tense for several years, with both countries frequently exchanging accusations over insecurity and the activities of armed groups operating in eastern Congo. However, regional and international mediation efforts continue to push for dialogue and diplomatic solutions to the crisis.
