The political coordination of the Alliance Fleuve Congo (AFC/M23) has received a high-level delegation from the World Food Programme (WFP), led by its representative David Stevenson, accompanied by three senior officials, in a strategic meeting focused on ongoing humanitarian interventions in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The AFC/M23 political coordinator, Corneille Nangaa, officially welcomed the WFP delegation at the movement’s coordination office, where both sides held discussions aimed at strengthening cooperation in food assistance delivery and humanitarian access in areas under AFC/M23 administration.

The WFP commended what it described as relative stability and improved organization in areas administered by AFC/M23, noting that such conditions have enabled the continuation and expansion of humanitarian programmes targeting vulnerable communities across North Kivu and South Kivu provinces.

Both parties also discussed persistent humanitarian challenges affecting local populations, particularly the continued closure of banking services in several areas. According to WFP, this situation has significantly limited families’ access to their financial resources, increasing economic pressure on already vulnerable communities.

In response, AFC/M23 reaffirmed its commitment to supporting credible humanitarian initiatives aimed at alleviating civilian suffering and improving living conditions in the territories under its control. The movement emphasized its willingness to facilitate humanitarian access and cooperation with international partners.

The question of reopening the local airport was also raised during the discussions, with both sides recognizing its importance for improving the movement of humanitarian aid, commercial activity, and essential services. Further consultations are expected on the matter.

The meeting concluded in a constructive atmosphere, with both AFC/M23 and WFP expressing a shared commitment to strengthening coordination and ensuring continued humanitarian support to affected populations in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo.

The engagement reflects ongoing efforts to enhance humanitarian delivery mechanisms while addressing urgent needs in conflict-affected areas of North and South Kivu.
