The Minister of Defence of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Guy Kabombo Muadiamvita, has confirmed that the AFC/M23 armed group has succeeded in accessing and infiltrating the communication systems of the Congolese armed forces (FARDC).

He made this statement while appearing before a parliamentary committee responsible for defence and security issues, where he was explaining the current operational challenges facing the national army.

According to the minister, the AFC/M23 group has developed advanced communication capabilities that allow it to intercept sensitive military messages exchanged between command structures and troops deployed on the battlefield. This situation, he said, has significantly affected military operations.

He further explained that due to weaknesses in FARDC’s communication infrastructure in the era of modern warfare, enemy forces have been able to access operational information, making it difficult for the army to effectively plan and execute missions.

“The lack of effective communication in a context of advanced technology has created a serious problem. Forces on the ground have experienced situations where the enemy could access their messages, which has disrupted military operations,” he said.

The minister added that AFC/M23 has built a sophisticated communication system that enables it to monitor and intercept discussions within FARDC leadership and frontline units.

A parliamentary report also indicated that communication is a critical element in modern warfare, and failures in this area have contributed to repeated setbacks for the Congolese army.

To address this issue, the DRC government is reportedly in discussions with allied countries to acquire modern communication equipment that cannot be intercepted by AFC/M23.
