Mali - Assimi Goïta appoints himself defence Minister after Military shake-up
Mali’s transitional leader, Assimi Goïta, has taken on the role of Minister of Defence while continuing to serve as President of the transitional government, according to an official statement released by the state.
The announcement follows reports of the death of the former Defence Minister, Sadio Camara, who is said to have been killed during rebel attacks in the capital, Bamako. The government has not provided detailed circumstances surrounding the incident, but the development comes amid ongoing security challenges in the country.
By assuming both roles, Goïta now consolidates key military and political authority at a time when Mali continues to face instability linked to armed insurgent groups operating in several regions.
Mali, a West African nation officially known as Mali, has been under transitional military leadership since recent coups, with authorities pledging to restore security and stability across the country.
The latest move is expected to further strengthen Goïta’s control over the armed forces as the government continues its counterinsurgency operations and attempts to stabilize the capital and surrounding regions.
