The Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) has officially awarded the City of Kigali the prestigious “UCI Bike City” label in recognition of the successful hosting of the 2025 UCI Road World Championships, an event that made history as the first-ever UCI World Championships to be held on African soil.

The recognition was presented during the 2026 “UCI Mobility & Bike City Forum” held in Athens on May 10-11, 2026, where city leaders, cycling stakeholders, and international sports officials gathered to discuss sustainable urban mobility and the future of cycling worldwide.

The “UCI Bike City” label is awarded to cities that excel in hosting major international cycling events while also promoting cycling as part of daily urban transport and sustainable mobility. Kigali earned the distinction following widespread praise for its organization of the 2025 championships, which took place from September 21 to 28, 2025.

The championship attracted thousands of spectators, athletes, journalists, and cycling fans from around the world. It also showcased Rwanda’s rapid progress in developing cycling infrastructure and promoting the sport across the country. Kigali’s hilly terrain, modern roads, cleanliness, security, and hospitality were all highlighted as key strengths during the event.

Hosting the tournament was considered a major milestone not only for Rwanda but also for African sport, as it marked the first time the prestigious cycling competition had been organized on the continent. International observers described the event as a success that opened new opportunities for Africa in global cycling competitions.

The recognition further strengthens Kigali’s growing reputation as one of Africa’s leading destinations for international sporting events, adding to Rwanda’s broader ambition of positioning itself as a hub for global conferences, tourism, and sports development.
