President Paul Kagame begins two-day working visit to Botswana to boost bilateral cooperation
President Paul Kagame arrived in Gaborone on May 6, 2026, marking the start of a two-day working visit aimed at strengthening ties between Rwanda and Botswana.
Upon arrival at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, President Kagame was received by his counterpart, Duma Boko. The visit underscores the strong and growing relationship between the two nations, built on mutual respect and shared development goals.
During the visit, President Kagame is expected to hold bilateral talks with President Boko, followed by expanded discussions involving senior officials from both countries. The engagements will focus on enhancing cooperation in key sectors including trade, agriculture, technology, and overall economic development.
Several agreements are expected to be signed, covering areas such as the avoidance of double taxation, visa facilitation, air transport, trade, and investment. Rwanda’s Rwanda Development Board is also set to sign cooperation agreements with its Botswana counterpart.
In addition to official talks, President Kagame will attend a state banquet hosted in his honor and is scheduled to visit a diamond trading company in Gaborone on May 7, highlighting Botswana’s globally recognized mining sector.
The visit comes alongside ongoing meetings of the Joint Permanent Commission for Cooperation between the two countries, bringing together government officials and private sector representatives to explore new opportunities for partnership and investment.
Analysts say the visit is expected to yield tangible outcomes, particularly in boosting trade and joint ventures that will benefit citizens of both nations. Rwanda and Botswana already maintain strong cooperation across sectors such as mining, defense, diplomacy, agriculture, and investment, and this visit is seen as a step toward elevating that partnership even further.
