The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of National Unity and Civic Engagement, Eric Mahoro, on Thursday joined students, teachers, parents, survivors, and the leadership of Kigali New Life Christian Academy in Kicukiro District for the 32nd commemoration of the 1994 Genocide against the Tutsi.

The event brought together members of the school community to honor the victims of the Genocide against the Tutsi and reflect on the importance of preserving Rwanda’s history and strengthening national unity.

Addressing participants, Mahoro paid tribute to survivors for their courage, resilience, and commitment to sharing the truth with younger generations. He emphasized that Rwanda will continue to remember and protect the truth about its history.

He highlighted the important role schools play in shaping responsible citizens, noting that education should go beyond academic excellence to include character building, conscience, and values-centered leadership.

Mahoro explained that remembrance activities in schools help raise young people who reject division, resist genocide ideology, stand against hate speech, and embrace compassion, integrity, and truth.

He also stressed that teaching children and youth about Rwanda’s history must be done with honesty, care, and responsibility, while encouraging parents and teachers to remain committed to educating the younger generation about the country’s values and past.

Speaking directly to students, Mahoro praised their willingness to learn and ask questions about Rwanda’s history, reminding them that they are not too young to understand the lessons drawn from the country’s past.

“You are not too young to learn, you are the right age to begin,” he told the students.

He further urged young people to know their history, challenge genocide denial with courage and knowledge, and continue building a united Rwanda founded on dignity, truth, and shared humanity.
