The number of Ebola infections in the Democratic Republic of Congo has surpassed 450, while the death toll has risen to 82, as health officials warn of rapid community transmission in the country's northeast.

According to the DRC Ministry of Health, a total of 460 Ebola cases had been reported as of June 4, 2026, including 344 confirmed infections and 116 suspected cases. "The outbreak has infected at least 452 people and killed 82." according to the latest figures released by Congolese health authorities.

The epidemic is centered in Ituri Province in northeastern DRC, where the first cases were detected. However, confirmed infections have also been reported in North Kivu and South Kivu provinces, raising concerns about further regional spread due to population movement and ongoing insecurity in eastern Congo.

The outbreak has been complicated by challenges including armed conflict, difficult access to affected communities, and mistrust of health interventions in some areas.

The World Health Organization (WHO) declared the Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo virus strain a Public Health Emergency of International Concern in May, citing the risk of cross-border transmission and the uncertainty surrounding the true scale of infections.

The organization noted that there are currently no approved vaccines or treatments specifically designed for this strain of the virus. "The ongoing insecurity, humanitarian crisis and high population mobility further compound the risk of spread," WHO said in a statement announcing the emergency declaration.

Neighboring countries have increased monitoring measures at border crossings following reports of imported cases linked to travel from the DRC. Rwanda previously tightened controls at some border points after cases were detected among travelers arriving from Congo.
