President Kagame Bids Farewell to UN Resident Coordinator Dr. Ozonnia Ojielo
President Paul Kagame has bid farewell to Ozonnia Ojielo, the United Nations Resident Coordinator in Rwanda, as he concludes his diplomatic assignment in the country after nearly four years of service.
Dr. Ojielo assumed the role on July 10, 2022, following his appointment by António Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, with the approval of the Government of Rwanda.
His farewell meeting with President Kagame took place on Sunday, March 8, 2026, after he spent the past days meeting several senior government officials ahead of the end of his mandate.
Discussions during these meetings highlighted the achievements of the UN’s “Delivering as One” initiative, a program that integrates the work of different UN agencies to improve development cooperation. Rwanda was among the eight pilot countries where the initiative was first implemented.
Currently, the United Nations Sustainable Development Cooperation Framework aligns UN support with Rwanda’s development priorities while coordinating efforts between UN agencies and their partners.
The Government of Rwanda acknowledges the important role the United Nations continues to play in providing critical data and technical support that helps guide national development policies. Officials also emphasize the need to continuously strengthen development cooperation frameworks.
Dr. Ojielo expressed appreciation for the commitment of UN staff in Rwanda, noting that they remain dedicated to supporting the country’s development efforts and addressing challenges that may hinder progress.
According to him, 2026 is a significant year for Rwanda as it marks the completion of its journey toward graduating from the Least Developed Country (LDC) category, with an international review expected in 2027.
The UN Executive Committee in Rwanda emphasized the importance of continued dialogue between all stakeholders to sustain inclusive development that leaves no one behind.
